The Coceka Recycling Pod
The Coceka Recycling Pod is a small, local recycling centre right here in Kayamandi. It is not a big factory – it is a community hub where plastic waste is turned into something valuable.
Imagine a place where bottles are not rubbish, where waste collectors are paid fairly. This is where bottles and containers become clean plastic flakes that can be used to make new products.
Apha inkunkuma iba lithuba – here, waste becomes opportunity!
By recycling at the Pod, waste collectors and residents can earn money while helping the environment. The Pod also sells processed plastic to recycling companies, helping the project pay for itself and grow.

How the Recycling Pod works
- Waste collectors and residents of Kayamandi bring plastic to the Pod
- The plastic is sorted and weighed
- Collectors are paid for what they bring – either immediately or weekly/monthly as per arrangement
- The plastic is shredded into small flakes or granules and washed
- These flakes and granules are sold to companies that make new plastic products
Nothing wasted. Value created. Jobs supported.
Iqhutywa ngabanthu baseKayamandi – Run by the Community

What the Coceka Recycling Pod produces
Turning Plastic into something new
Inside each Coceka Recycling Pod, plastic waste is turned into small plastic flakes or granules.
These flakes and granules are used by recycling companies to make new products.
Each pod can produce around 100 kg of recycled plastic per hour.
We mainly recycle:
- PET 1 (PET bottles) – like cooldrink and water bottles
- PET 2 (HDPE) – like containers, tubs and household plastics
- PET 5 (PP plastics) – like straws, yoghurt containers and food packaging
Some of the recycled plastic can even be good enough for food packaging again.

The machinery in the Coceka Recycling Pod is not experimental. They are already working in more than 30 pods in KwaZulu-Natal, with over 5 years of real-life use. This means the system is reliable, tested and ready to scale.
Small plastic, BIG impact
When plastic is shredded, the material volume reduces by up to 10 times. This means:
- It is suitable for community-based hubs and onsite commercial use (factories, malls, business precincts)
- Decentralised recycling is enabled close to the source of waste
- Fewer trucks on the road
- Lower transport costs
- Less pollution from moving waste
